Edition 12: The 'Low Down ✨
Hey friends,
Are you ready to kick off 2024 with a bang? I always say I feature events in this newsletter that I’d personally like to attend. However, this edition’s first event is one exception: I may come from a Turkey Trot family but I am certainly NOT a Polar Plunger. That said, I’m including it for the brave souls out there… Happy New Year!

🧊 January 1 at Coney Island: Polar Bear Club New Year’s Day Plunge – “Each year on January 1, members of the Coney Island Polar Bear Club and anyone else brave enough to participate venture into the frigid waters at Coney Island. Watch hundreds of daring souls plunge into the Atlantic Ocean, where the temperature of the water hovers right above 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and the air temperature can be well below freezing. The event is free, but in lieu of admission, participants are encouraged to donate to community organizations.” [Free]
🍆 January 6 and February 11 at The Public Theater: Never Sleep Alone – “Celebrity sex and dating guru Dr. Alex Schiller (Roslyn Hart) is back with a new edition of Never Sleep Alone, a comedy show/dating event where people laugh, learn and literally hook up. Audience members who sit in the front PLAYERS section may be called onstage for blind dates, flirtatious games, and consensual make-outs with fellow singles. (And if a hot hook-up isn’t incentive enough, audience members who join Dr. Alex onstage get free champagne and a golden condom that grants them VIP access to the after-party!) Those seated in the VOYEURS section can simply sit back and enjoy the show if they’re not into that level of participation. Everyone, however, will get to sing along to a live band and follow the doctor’s orders from their seat.” [$60]
🎼 January 6 at Lincoln Center: University Glee Club of New York City – 257th Members’ Concert with Voices & Sirens of Gotham – “The University Glee Club of New York City, founded in 1894, is thrilled to perform their 257th Members’ Concert at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall. From contemporary choral classics such as ‘Ring Out Wild Bells’ and ‘The Pasture’, to sea songs and pop music, the program covers an impressive breadth of musical genres. Joining the UGC will be singers from the Voices of Gotham and the Sirens of Gotham, two barbershop choruses from NYC.” Note: FOTN Pierson will be singing with UGC! [$50 with code “UGC”]
🎤 January 8 at The Bell House: The Moth StorySLAM – “The Moth StorySLAMs are storytelling competitions where the stage is open to any and all with a story to tell on the evening's theme…FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Prepare a five-minute story about initial encounters. Blind dates, fixer-uppers, catfish, and long-lost twins. When your gut instincts were proven right, or when you unfairly judged a book by its cover. Day one at a new job, new school, or new city. The stinky cheese was actually scrumptious. The singer with the gravelly voice that you grow to love. The indelible mark made upon meeting somebody for the first time.” [$20]

✍️ January 11 at St Ann’s Church: Jami Attenberg: 1000 Words w/ Kristen Arnett, Alexander Chee, Mira Jacob, & Emma Straub – “In 2018, novelist Jami Attenberg, faced with a looming deadline, needed writing inspiration. Using a bootcamp model, she and a friend set out to write one thousand words daily for two weeks straight. They opened this practice to Attenberg’s online community and soon hundreds then thousands of people started using the #1000WordsofSummer hashtag to track their work and support one another. What began as a simple challenge between two friends has become a literary movement—write 1,000 words per day without judgment, or bias, or concerns about writer’s block, and see what comes of it.” [$10]
👹 January 18 at Littlefield: Shrek Entirely From Memory – “Ten Bones Theatre Company is back for their next installment of the Entirely From Memory series! Performers will attempt (and most likely fail) to recreate “Shrek”, without the aid of scripts, rehearsals, or sobriety. All they will have will be their memory, a recent viewing of the film, and a lot of wigs.” [$12]

🪩 January 26 at DROM: Schtick a Pole In It – “From comedians Dan Goodman and JoAnna Ross comes NYC's best and only, Comedy and Pole Dancing show. As featured in the NYTimes, TimeOutNY, and AMNY Schtick a Pole In It starts with a comic and ends with a pole dancer. 5 comics and 5 dancers. Comics tell jokes. Pole dancers pole dance.
